Dental Crowns

Dental CrownsNothing looks better than being greeted with a warm, shining smile. We all want to have perfect teeth — and dental crowns can make this dream a reality. Dental crowns can provide a smooth, white, and straight smile while still retaining much of your natural teeth. At Crosby Dentistry, we are passionate about giving you a beautiful smile that is sure to boost your confidence.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is an artificial tooth that is placed over your natural tooth, somewhat like a hat. Sometimes, dental crowns are called “caps” for this reason. Dental crowns are made of durable porcelain that can be shaded and styled to look exactly like your natural teeth, or you can choose a lighter and brighter shade of porcelain to give your teeth a beautiful white finish. Dental crowns can be used for any tooth in your mouth, including the front teeth and molars.

When Would I Choose a Crown?

Crowns have many benefits compared to other cosmetic dental procedures such as veneers or bonding, and Dr. Crosby can help you decide if a crown is right for your unique needs.

Some benefits of crowns compared to other procedures include:

  • Look and feel of a natural tooth
  • Durable and long-lasting
  • Protection for the entire tooth to fight off decay
  • May be covered by dental insurance

Sometimes crowns are necessary, especially when the natural tooth is severely broken or decayed. Replacing a damaged tooth with a full crown can help you maintain a beautiful smile.

What Happens During a Crown Procedure?

Replacing your natural teeth with dental crowns is a two-step procedure. First, our team will provide you with a local anesthetic, and sometimes sedation medication, to keep you calm and comfortable during the procedure. Then, Dr. Crosby will gently wear away much of your natural tooth to make room for the dental crown.

Once the teeth are prepared, a wax mold will be made of your teeth to determine the correct size and spacing. We send your mold to the laboratory, where your custom dental crowns are made. You’ll also be able to choose just the right color to give your teeth a natural glow. The dentist will then apply temporary crowns to your teeth to protect them and allow you to eat and drink normally.

Once your finished dental crowns are returned to our office, you’ll be ready for your second appointment where the dentist will cement your new crowns to your natural teeth permanently. The crowns will be shaped with tiny adjustments to ensure there is enough room between the teeth so that you can floss. Dr, Crosby will also make sure your bite pattern remains the same. Once your dental crowns feel comfortable, you are ready to enjoy your brand-new smile.

Are Dental Crowns Durable?

Compared to other cosmetic dentistry options, dental crowns are incredibly durable. One of the most significant benefits of crowns is their long life span. They are constructed of porcelain, which can endure a great deal of wear and tear. Often, dental crowns can last for fifteen years or more with the proper care.

Maintaining your crowns will also depend on the level of oral hygiene you practice. Clean your dental crowns just as you would your natural teeth. Be sure to brush and floss regularly, and use a mouthwash with added nutrients like fluoride to keep your teeth healthy. It is always a good practice to avoid biting into hard foods like nuts or ice to prevent cracking or breaking your crowns.

Our Crosby Dentistry team will be happy to answer all of your dental crown questions. Call our office today to schedule a consultation or to learn more about this procedure.
